8.3
Encoding Proper Names
Names shall be encoded with a combination of free text and zero or more categories as outlined in the
below rules.  If the name has a suffix (street lane, drive), then add it to the string when needed.  Do not
depend on the type of name to convey this information.
Names are in general made up of free text entries. These names are applied to objects,
destinations, structures, exits, and places to provide a more complete explanation of an event or
sign.
Names need not be offset with denoted types (named objects) unless this additional data is
required.
Names which can be encoded entirely with ITIS codes should be encoded this way and not use
free text.  Many common generic names and objects can be encoded in this way.
Names which contain numbers can be encoded using the rules for numerical encodings as well.
The name produced shall be the sum of all codes that follow.
Encodings should use the smallest number of code possible to express the result.
Any prefix or suffix letters required to make an entry with mixed number and text shall be
encoded as text in the order required.
Any prefix or suffix directionality or direction of travel (i.e. West Route 66  or Westbound Route
66) required to make a entry shall be encoded using the generic location codes.
Any street suffix strings (i.e. Alley, Avenue, Street, Drive, etc.) required to make a entry shall be
encoded using the street suffixes codes, if that string exists in those codes.  Otherwise free text
may be used.
Any street suffix strings ending in an “s” (i.e. Streets, Estates, Lanes, etc.) shall be made up of the
suffix phrase with a free text “s” added following it.
