This is an SAE Motor Vehicle Council draft document of the DSRC committee, subject to change.
1. Scope  
This SAE Recommended Practice is intended as a guide toward standard practice and is subject to change
to keep pace with experience and technical advances. This SAE Recommended Practice specifies standard
message sets, data frames and data elements for use by applications intended to utilize the 5.9 GHz
Dedicated Short Range Communications for Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (DSRC/WAVE,
referenced in this document simply as “DSRC”), communications systems.  The scope is limited to
specifying initial representative message structure and providing sufficient background information to
allow readers to properly interpret the DSRC standards and message definitions from the point of view of
an application developer.
1.1
Purpose 
The purpose of this SAE Recommended Practice is to support interoperability among DSRC applications
through the use of standardized message sets, data frames and data elements. This Recommended Practice
provides information that is useful in understanding how to apply the various DSRC standards, along with
the message sets, data frames and data elements specified herein, to produce interoperable DSRC
applications.
This second edition of the standard added addition content created since the first adopted edition and also
corrects minor typographical errors in found in the former edition.  
2.  References
The following documents shall be used, when applicable, in the process of populating and developing the
message sets of this standard. The specific revision and issued date stated below shall be used for each
document.  When the following documents are superseded by an approved revision, the revised version
shall be reviewed for applicability. 
The references cited below shall be included in the references of the other companion volumes of this
standard unless specifically excluded.
