Encoding Weight Limits and Prohibited Use Patterns
Signs of this type (typically denoted an R12 or a D8 category types in MUTCD) are typically used to state
limits of weight, height, axles count or other restrictions on travel over roads, bridges, and other objects.
The pattern to be followed is:
<direction or arrow><named object><destination details><optional distance, value, units>
Often more than one restriction may be stated in a single sign expression; such cases should be separated
by the and phrase.
In constructing signs using these patterns the following rules shall be observed:
The units term shall be present only when it is preceded by a numerical value.
When there is no speed unit code present the value shall be in units of MPH.
When there is no weight unit code present the value shall be in units of tons.
When there is no height unit code present the value shall be in units of feet.
When there is no distance unit code present the value shall be in units of miles.
