Encoding with Street Suffixes used in Patterns
This category type is often used with street and place name signs where the suffix is part of the proper
name of the object.
<rest of sign>< optional pre-name><name string><street suffix><optional free text><rest of sign>
The street suffix category is used for such names. If the required name string ends in an “s” to make it
plural it is typically made up of the street suffix category and then the “s” in expressed free text (i.e. Hill –
Hills, Garden – Gardens, Estate – Estates, etc.). Do not use the street suffix category to indicate that kind of
object which is involved (the named entries are to be used for this need). An optional pre-name may also
be present (typically direction type data).
In constructing signs using these patterns the following rules shall be observed:
Suffix entries shall be used over free text when such use will conserve bandwidth
Singular suffix entries shall be made plural by the addition of a free text “s” at the end.
Prefix names shall be chosen from the suitable ITIS codes and not composed of free text whenever
possible.
Note that abbreviations are always spelled out in the suffix entries. This rule need not be followed
in constructed textual names.
Expressions with more than one name shall separate each item with the code words “and” or “or”
as needed.
Parentheses and brackets may be used when expressing alternative names in free text “( ) {} [] <>
etc.) but should be separated with an “or” construct from the primary name.
