Encoding with Vehicle and Traveler Class Systems used in Patterns
Sign text of this type is typically added to a basic sign type to include or exclude a specific class of vehicle
or user from the rule or information created by the sign.
<rest of sign><optional include or exclude><named vehicle or user class><rest of sign>
The include or exclude term (if present) will indicate if the class data (one or more entries) to follow
represents those affected by the rest of the sign or those exempted from the sign. All other classes not
mentioned are generally presumed to fall into the other category, but there are exceptions to this. The
named vehicle or user class denotes the type of vehicle or user. It can be taken from the listed items found
in the categories:
Group-35
Transit Mode
Group-36
Vehicle Groups Affected
Group-37
Traveler Group Affected
Group-38
Responder Group Affected
Group-39
Incident Response Equipment
In constructing signs using these patterns the following rules shall be observed:
In the absence of such data, signs are presumed to apply to all classes of vehicles and travelers at
all times.
The ITIS general term for all car vehicles in category 36 can be chosen from: cars, light
vehicles, cars and light vehicles but cars and light vehicles is preferred.
When a suitable term for a class of vehicle or a class of traveler can not be found, the general term
traffic (also in category 36) can be used.
Expressions with more than one vehicle or user class shall separate each item with the code words
and or or as needed.
