9. MUTCD Signage Patterns Expressed in ITIS
The following phrases are taken from the MUTCD list of signs, specifically the document Standard
Highway Signs (2004 edition and its successors). The below ordering follows the list found in the table of
contents for that document. The purpose of this section is to provide normative information regarding how
to translate such signage into ITIS expressions. The list is intended to be illustrative, not exhaustive.
Each phrase has been translated into a suitable equivalent ITIS expression for use. The MUTCD sign
expressions often contain one or more representative values (such as “25” in “Speed Limit 25 MPH”) to
provide examples of common use. The translation provided shows such values with a tagged value such as
<num> to indicate that a variety of possible codes can be placed in that position to render different specific
signs. Usage comments are added as needed. In general, any sign pattern not found below can be easily
derived from the examples and from the rudimentary grammar rules established in section eight.
